Description

Coreopsis lanceolata, commonly known as Tickseed Coreopsis, is a native perennial forb (wildflower) which typically grows to 2′ tall and occurs in prairies, glades, fields and roadsides.

Wildlife notes

Tickseed Coreopsis is a favorite with deer in the fall and winter. Rabbits and groundhogs also eat the foliage. Goldfinches and other birds find the seeds to be delectable. A bee species, the Coreopsis Bee (Andrena beameri) depends on Coreopsis species as their primary pollen source. Bees, butterflies, beetles and wasps visit the flowers for nectar and pollen. Yet other insects, including the Coreopsis Leaf Beetle (Calligrapha californica coreopsivora), consume the plant leaves and juices sometimes to the point that they can harm the plant population.

Forage notes

Tickseed Coreopsis has a growth curve similar to that of the cool season grasses; it greens up with the fall rains, stays green throughout the winter, and is one of the first plants to grow again in the spring. It is quite palatable to livestock at this time.

Landscaping notes

Easily grown in dry to medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun. Thrives in poor, sandy or rocky soils with good drainage. Tolerant of heat, humidity and drought. Prompt deadheading encourages additional bloom and prevents any unwanted self-seeding. In optimum growing conditions, this plant will naturalize to form large colonies. Plants may be cut back hard in summer if foliage sprawls or becomes unkempt. If grown in borders, division may be needed every 2-3 years to maintain robustness. Looks great planted with Blue Indigo.

Restoration notes

This plant’s motto is, “I love it dry”. Tickseed Coreopsis is found on glades, sandy soils, and other dry sites and does best where there is minimal competition from other vegetation. This plant is a great addition to restorations on dry sites and will often bloom the second year. It can be added to restorations on mesic soils as well, but it often does not persist.

This species is commonly used in the following mixes: Shadows & Sunbeams Mix, Wildlife Chuckwagon Mix, Dry’n Rocky Mix, Butterfly & Hummingbird Mix, Prairie Patchwork Mix, Streambank Mix
