How do we keep our cattle fed and in good condition in the winter on native forages?
Native cool season grasses provide a protein boost to mix with the brown, dormant native warm season grasses. This combination is adequate for our cows, which are not lactating in the winter. The growth habit of the Southeast Wild Rye is such that when the cattle take a bite they also consume the dry, brown leaves of the dormant Eastern Gamagrass.
