Porcupine grass

The seed that plants itself

This is one of the most unique seeds that we harvest here at Hamilton Native Outpost. The long awn of Porcupine grass (𝘚𝘵𝘪𝘱𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘢 𝘰𝘳 𝘏𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘱𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘢) spirals while it dries, which causes the sharp seed to be driven several inches into the soil. Our time-lapse shows how the awn straightens when exposed to moisture and spirals as it dries. Porcupine Grass has joined our selection of Native Grass and Wildflower seed this year, which means that you can grow this fascinating grass in your own planting. Buy porcupine grass here.
