Description
Carex hirsutella, commonly known as Fuzzy Wuzzy Sedge or Hairy Green Sedge, is a native perennial cool season sedge usually found in rather dry open woodlands.
Wildlife notes
Caterpillars of Appalachian Brown butterfly, leaf-mining larvae of some moths, the stink bug, and aphids eat Fuzzy Wuzzy Sedge. Wild Turkey, Cardinal, Eastern Towhee, Song Sparrow, Lincoln Sparrow, Tree Sparrow, Common Redpoll, and Slate-colored Junco eat the seeds. The White-Tailed Deer (foliage), Black Bear (foliage), Gray Squirrel (seedheads), and Fox Squirrel (seedheads) use woodland sedges as a source of food to a minor extent.

This sedge is typically found in partial sun to light shade, mesic to slightly dry conditions, and somewhat sterile soil containing sand, rocky material, or clay. Like many other sedges, it will form small tufts of leaves and culms.
Restoration notes
Habitats include upland woodlands, thinly wooded bluffs, wooded slopes, typical savannas and sandy savannas, rocky glades, sandy meadows, and abandoned fields. This sedge often occurs where oaks are the dominant canopy trees in woodland habitats.
